Pet Allergy Causes

Just like with people, pet allergies can be caused by any number of allergens. Some pets suffer from seasonal allergies which can be caused by different pollens and spores released into the environment. Other pets may suffer from environmental allergies, either outside or found within the home. It is not uncommon to see pets that are allergic to dust, detergents, or even smoke. Lastly, pets can also be allergic to different foods or treats.

The Signs of Allergies

Allergies can manifest in a variety of ways, depending on the type of allergen and allergy. With seasonal allergies, many pets will have skin irritation. This can be evident from constant scratching, itching, or biting at the legs, paws, or behind the ears. The skin may appear red or raw, or patches of fur might be missing. If you ever notice the skin is raw or bleeding, take your pet to vet immediately. Open skin wounds are a perfect site for dangerous bacteria to enter the body. Other allergies, like seasonal allergies, can appear as congestion. Your pet may sneeze, cough, or wheeze and have watery eyes and nose. As for food allergies, your pet may show signs of intestinal stress which often takes the form of diarrhea or vomiting.

Help From a Veterinarian

Our veterinarian can help diagnose and treat allergies when you bring your pet in for a visit. First, the vet may take a sample of the skin to verify that the irritation is not caused by a bacterial infection or a parasite. From there, our vet will work with you to try to identify patterns or irritants found in the pet's environment. Several allergy medications are available for pets. Many of these medications are in a pill form, taken orally. Often, pets will only need to be on allergy medication when allergens are present in the environment.
